LASIK Laser Eye Surgery: LASIK laser eye procedure involves lasering under the surface of the cornea. A very thin superficial layer of the cornea (approximately the thickness of a human hair and a quarter of the cornea's thickness) is cut and lifted. After the exposed tissue is lasered the flap is repositioned and remains in place by natural suction. The flap remains joined to the cornea, like a hinge, enabling it to be replaced in exactly the same position, minimising the healing process. The benefits include a pain free recovery, quick restoration of eyesight
and better results for severe short sight. The inner eye is not pierced
during the procedure and stitches are not required. Epi-LASEK eye surgery The thin, protective outer layer of cells (epithelium) is softened with alcohol and folded aside. You then stare at the target light whilst the laser is applied to the cornea for about 30 seconds. Additional laser treatment for astigmatic correction, (if required), takes place after a short pause and takes a further 15 seconds, dependent on the level of correction required. The epithelium is then gently pushed back into place. You will spend a total of about 15 minutes in the laser room. You will then be given instructions and medication to take home and you may leave the clinic. Patients find the whole process simple and easy. Many say that having the treatment is easier than a visit to the dentist. We recommend that a friend or relative accompanies you home. This is essential if both eyes are treated on the same day. Severe short, long sight and astigmatism are now treatable with Implantable
Contact Lenses, (ICL's)
Suitability Using implantable contact lenses we can now treat patients with prescriptions up to -23d or +12d with +/- 7d of astigmatism. The treatment is also available for patients who are unsuitable for laser treatment due to corneal thickness or after cataract removal. The treatment is not suitable for people over 60 years of age or anyone developing cataracts. People with high glaucoma, recurrent eye infections and other eye diseases may not be suitable. Artisan Lenses We use 8mm Artisan phakic lenses for implantation, which were designed and first used by a Dutch doctor, Jan Worst, in 1977. In the last 16 years, more than 30,000 of Dr Worst's lenses have been implanted worldwide, treating severe refractive disorders with great success. This treatment is performed by our Clinical Director, Professor Venter who is a world-renowned optical surgeon and a member of the clinical research team for ICL's . He has performed approximately 600 ICL's to date.
An initial consultation will confirm your suitability and determine the strength of lens required. If you decide to go ahead with treatment, the lenses will be made to your exact specifications and will be ready in 4 - 6 weeks. Consultations for ICL's are available in our London and Croydon clinics at this time.
It is advisable to have a light snack prior to treatment to ensure that you feel comfortable. This procedure requires either a local anaesthetic (injection) or topical anaesthetic (eye drops) to numb the eye, and the choice can be decided on the day of the treatment. Antibiotic eye drops are also administered 30 minutes before the anaesthetic to help prevent infection during the procedure.
The operation is performed in a full surgical theatre, which Optimax outsources at a hospital in Central London. The lens is inserted through a small incision in the side of the cornea and sits in front of the eye's natural lens, just behind the cornea. Antibiotic drops are then administered to avoid infection. The whole procedure takes around 1 - 2 hours to complete. You will be able to go home on the same day but it is essential that you have someone to accompany you. For utmost safety in case of infection or rejection, lenses are implanted one at a time, allowing a minimum recovery time of one week between treatments.
You are free to leave the clinic as soon as you feel able, with padding over the eye to prevent infection. Visual recovery is rapid, with noticeable improvement within a day or two. You should be able to drive and be back to work within two weeks of the procedure.
All aftercare is included in our price. You will need to be seen by the treating doctor on the day after surgery, so an overnight stay in a local hotel may be desirable. You are then seen after one week when the second eye may be operated on. Aftercare visits are then required after one month and three months and then as directed by the surgeon.
The initial consultation costs £60. The treatment costs £995 per eye, plus an extra £300 per eye for astigmatism correction above 2d. If you decide to go ahead with treatment, a deposit of £500 per eye will be required to order the manufacture of your lenses. As they are made to your personal requirement, this deposit is non-refundable. The remaining balance is payable one week prior to treatment. Possible side effects With lens implants, there is a small but unavoidable risk of infection. This risk is minimised with the use of full sterile theatre conditions. There is also a small possibility of damage to the structure of the eye, which could lead to problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal complications, corneal decomposition and rejection. Severely short-sight people often have other eye problems such as damaged retinas and progressively deteriorating eyesight. Implantable contact lenses cannot help or stop these associated conditions. In the event of complications, ICL's are potentially reversible. (ie removable or exchangeable)
Optimax Eye Treatment Specialists are the UK's leading providers of corrective
eye surgery and Cataract surgery Restore clear vision with Cataract surgery and improve your quality of
life and regain your independence Wavefront LASIK Eye Surgery It is important to understand that Wavefront is relatively new and therefore experimental. Its clinical significance and associated benefits over standard methods remain unconfirmed. For this reason, Optimax have postponed the use of their Wavefront machines until proof of its benefits for the average person are confirmed. At this stage, we would certainly not recommend it as being superior to standard treatment, however, if our doctors think that you would benefit from it, they will advise you accordingly. Wavefront is designed for those suffering corneal aberrations (unusually shaped eyes). It is therefore true to say that such people would not achieve a satisfactory result with current lasers and that they may therefore benefit from this alternative method, with its ability to reduce abnormal spherical aberrations. Most people with normal eyes and standard prescriptions would not benefit from this experimental treatment. There is no data to support the belief that Wavefront achieves superior satisfaction levels or functional performance (e.g. reading / driving) compared to conventional LASIK. Despite such questions arising over the authenticity of the merits attributed to Wavefront technology, many laser companies who have invested in its promotion, are reluctant to abandon the concept and therefore continue to promote it under the premise of being 'advanced, superior technology'. It is worth noting that in the clinics where wavefront is currently available, only 5% of people have been deemed suitable candidates. "It remains to be seen whether customised ablations will make a significant difference to the average patient" Royal College Of Ophthalmologists, Patients Guide, 9th April 2003
