Contact Lens Types

Daily disposables - this type of contact lens provides the bonus of no lens care - no cleaning or storage in a lens pot - as you have a new pair of lenses each time you wear them. They are thrown away after being worn so you do not need to buy additional contact lens cleaning fluids. Daily disposables are good for people who have allergies as there is no build up of allergens like pollen.

Monthly disposables - These offer the comfort of a soft lens. They can be worn daily for a month but need cleaning each night. They are more cost-effective than daily disposables.

Advances in contact lens compounds have lead to the development of new types of lenses making them available to more people and more lifestyles.

New style silicon hydrogel lenses - comfortable lenses, suitable for longer periods of time, even overnight - useful if you lead a very hectic lifestyle and can't always guarantee having your lens holder with you.

Monthly toric lenses - If you have astigmatism then the two prescriptions in one lens is for you.

Continuous wear lenses - suitable for 24 hour wear - can be worn continually for a month day and night before being thrown away.

Coloured contact lenses - if you want a different look then these can be very effective.

Important information - never rinse your lenses in tap water. Never rinse or use tap water for your lens case. This is because there are bacteria in tap water which can cause eye infections.
Always wash and dry your hands before handling lenses and air dry your lens case before replacing solutions.

Focus Dailies - these are extremely comfortable lenses to wear. They are made from a new material which contains nearly 70% water which means they're easier for your eyes. They are soft and thin, pre-moisturised so they're more comfortable from the moment you put them in. They're available in handy daily packs.

Questions about contact lenses:

Can I lose a contact lens in my eye? No, there is a membrane which stops the lens going round the back of the eye.

Does it hurt putting lenses in? Not if you're doing it right. The first time you try putting a lens in you will automatically close your eye - this is a natural protection reflex - once you've put lenses in a few times you know it doesn't hurt so you're able to overcome this reflex.

Always have clean hands whenhandling your lenses and putting them in. Good hygiene will help prevent you transfering bacteria to your eyes which could cause eye infections.

Avoid using your fingernails on contact lenses as this can damage them.

Eye hints - if your eyes hurt or your vision is not right then remove your lenses. You may have mixed them up.

Picking the right contact lenses - there is a huge choice of lenses available so its important to select the right lenses to suit you and your lifestyle.

How often are you wanting to wear them? Where would you wear them? How much are you planning to pay? Your prescription can also influence which lenses you need.

Before you can buy lenses online you need to have a proper contact lens prescription. You'll also need a contact lens fitting session with your optician to ensure you're able to fit your contact lenses yourself and that you know what you're doing with them.

Once you've got a prescription you are free to buy your lenses where you like - including online.
